Temat postu: pumas-46Pumas spoil EP’s party - Keo.co.za
The Pumas beat the EP Kings 46-28 in front of a capacity crowd at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to retain their Premier Division class.
The Kings couldn’t have asked for a better start to this second promotion-relegation match. Outside centre Wayne Stevens put right wing Paul Perez into space and then regained goods to score the first try. Former UCT No 8 JJ Gagiano then crazye the most of a botched
Pumas
lineout to make it 12-0 after 14 minutes.
The Kings were abated to 14 men in the 49th minute when loosehead prop Phumlani Nodikida was yellow carded yet scored six points,

, via two Dumond penalties, while he was off. But that good toil was undone when
Pumas
replacement prop Dawie Steyn was forcen over from a maul.

Bezuidenhout then kicked his second penalty, before right wing Vainon Willis sealed the win with his side’s sixth try after the hooter.
It was the visitors, though, who started the second half strongly, scoring through flank Corne Steenkamp after EP hooker Jaco Fourie failed to find his jumpers at the back. Le Roux then broke astep from a 5m scrum to offer his side a 27-22 advantage.
The defeat is a massive setback for the Kings who are hoping to be included in Super Rugby from 2013. Had they been promoted to the Premier Division, tutor Alan Solomons would have been able to attraction quality players and build a competitive side. Now his men will have to spend another season in the First Division wilderness.
The crowd found their voice again when EP took a quick penalty in front of the Pumas’ posts and Stevens grabbed his second try (the TMO regulationd that he had control of the ball before shoreing it).

However, the
Pumas
hit back at the start of the second quarter when flyhalf Elgar Watts threw a dummy and then passed inside to a charging Christo le Roux. The No 8 went over next to the posts, with fullback Carl Bezuidenhout kicking the conversion and then adding a penalty that cut the deficit to two.
Two minutes before half-time, second rower Andries Kruger scored for the Pumas but a penalty from Dumond gave the Kings a 22-15 lead at the interval.
This was supposed to be the night when the Kings rejoined SA rugby’s elite, but the Pumas recovered from a poor start to dominate the scrums and lengthouts and were worthy earnners.
