Recent heavy rainfall in Mexico's southeast state Tabasco has left at least 200,000 affected and caused tremendous property damage, authorities said Tuesday.
Tabasco's civil protection authorities said in a statement that 13 of the 17 municipalities in the state had suffered heavy damage.
State governor Andres Granier said Monday that the situation is getting worse each day, as the dams in Alto Grijalva had received 7,400 cubic meters of water per second on average.
"The risk is a real catastrophe, so the emergency will continue till the rain season finishes and the dams stop being vented," he said.
On Tuesday, Granier urged inhabitants in southern Villahermosa, the state capital, to leave their houses as the Carrizal River could overflow.
Authorities said 15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 people in Tabasco were supposed to be evacuated, while only 7,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 were willing to be taken to shelters. But thousands of people refused to do so, fearing their belongings will be lost or stolen.
